Penelope Kokkinides of Innovacare Health

It was a regular evening. In fact it was Valentines Day in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Shoppers were flocking to shopping centers on the romantic holiday in the island’s capital. Things had seemed to have returned to normal. As about as normal as one could expect after the devastating effects of Hurricane Maria.

The flooding waters have left the roadways, electricity has returned, debris and clutter have been cleared from public places and hundreds of thousands of people have found refuge in shelters. When the electricity fails, blackouts only last for a few hours compared to the days and weeks of going without power that the island has experienced over the past five months. With all the good things happening for Puerto Rico, thirty percent of residents live in rural areas where the devastation caused by Hurricane Maria still remain.

Inside the bustling shopping center is a store that use to be place for electronics to get recharged. Now its a place for the island’s residents to recharge from the aftermath of the hurricane. Innovacare Health, a New Jersey-based healthcare company, works in the this makeshift location offering physicals and simply advice to those seeking counsel and compassion. Tens of thousands of people visit this location. For many of the visitors, they have no other option of where to go to get their medical needs taken care of.

Innovacare Health aids residents in helping those affected by poverty, misplacement by the hurricane and those without transportation. The healthcare providers runs dozens of mobile clinics. The clinics assist patients with immediate needs and long term issues. A team of medical professionals works in these clinics. Doctors diagnose medical ailments. On site pharmacists fill prescription medicines. The services are free of charge to residents. Medicaid and Medicare fund what Innovacare Health is doing.

Penelope Kokkinides is the Chief Administrative Officer of Innovacare Health. She got the opportunity to meet with President Trump. She used the meeting to her advantage to discuss the need for increased funding for medical needs for Puerto Rico. Over one billion dollars annually has been cut from the Medicare funding for Puerto Rico. Days after their discussion, it was released to the public the improvements that would be made to the medical attention and funding needed for Puerto Rico’s recovery.

Betsy DeVos: Pushing for the Goals of Tomorrow

Whether you are Republican or Democrat, liberal or conservative, interested, or uninterested, you cannot deny that there seems to be a growing problem with the public-school system in the United States. In many ways, the system can be likened to an inexpensive daycare for parents to send their children while they work. In fact, many people joke that colleges are expensive daycares and are simply a continuation of this flawed system. While many people seem to want to make this a generational problem, the problem is a systematic one. Students are not receiving an education that is on par with what they deserve. They show up and attend their classes, but they’re not learning anything. If they do learn something, it’s a memorization or pneumonic centered around passing a test. There is no type of meaning associated with the material and they do not understand the context for which to use that type of information. In many cases, a lot of students don’t understand the information they’ve been taught until much later in their lives. The problem is that there’s no context or perhaps maybe it’s also that there is no level of care being put into their education.

Betsy DeVos inherited a huge problem when she took over the reins as Secretary of Education. She knew that students were dealing with this difficult issue, and she knew how to fix it. The problem is that many people are not willing to accept her drastic ideals when it comes to this particular problem. People maintain a general level of nostalgia for the public-school system, they don’t want to see it entirely destroyed but they know that there is a problem. They simply hope that administrators will be willing to put in the work necessary to complete the level of change that would bring the system up to par. Betsy DeVos believes that such amount of work would be in vain and that it would also require a huge catalyst. Betsy DeVos knows that that catalyst should be more interests in the beneficial components of school choice. School choice is the future and should not be discredited simply because it is a radical solution to an almost near constant problem.

Betsy DeVos explains to Philanthropy Roundtable that she will continue to be an advocate for this type of education, even though she has been appointed the head of the education system. In fact, in this position, she knows now more than ever how much work it will take to overhaul the entire network. The work necessary to create a better future for American students is going to fall on parents, administrators, teaching professionals, and all other support staff. There needs to be some type of interest paid to the students as they try to traverse a very complicated school system. It may be, that a change in their educational career into the field of school choice will be the only option they have had obtaining some of the larger goals that children of this demographic tend to have. Betsy DeVos is not willing to give up on these children’s goals.
