Betsy DeVos is a reformer and has all through been at the front line in the educational reform movement. She began her political career at the Calvin College where she actively took part in the campus politics and she has remained active up to date. Betsy DeVos has led several party organizations, campaigns and political action committee. She served as the chairman of the Republican Party for a period of six years.
Her husband Dick DeVos vied to be the Governor of Michigan as a Republican Party nominee, this clearly shows that the reforming spirit runs in Betsy’s family. Betsy DeVos serves other leadership roles including serving as the chairman of the Alliance of School Choice, American Federation for Children and the Windquest Group, a firm they founded together with her husband back in the year 1989. This firm largely invests in clean energy, manufacturing, and technology. Dick DeVos once served as the president of Amway and the Orlado magic NBA franchise.
Betsy DeVos pursues reforms by manipulation of several nonprofit roles. She chairs their family foundation and her charitable efforts are felt far and wide. Betsy is also an active member of a variety of national and local boards such as Kids Hope USA, Foundation for Excellence in Education, De Vos Institute for Arts Management and the Mar Hill Bible Church. She is widely known as a senior advocate for the educational choice movement.
According to Betsy, it wasn’t an instant incident that drew her in to educational-movement reforms but the entire thing was gradual. She said when her children were at a school going age, together with her husband they visited Potters House Christian School. The school, for a period of time, had been serving children from low income families and while there they got to interact with a good number of the parents. They went to the school more frequently just to visit and they learnt that for the most of the parents there, it was a great sacrifice to pay their children’s fees. This triggered them to support individual students and later on this became a commitment up to date.
This kind of dedication made them even think broadly about education and Dick expressed so through vying for the State Board of Education in Michigan and he was elected. After the successful elections, Betsy established a foundation centered on giving out scholarships to students who mainly came from families that earned little income. She was also working with two national charities which both worked to expand educational choice through tax credits and vouchers.
Betsy DeVos was born back in the year 1958 into wealthy prince family. She practices religion as a Christian as she was raised at a church in Holland. She is a dedicated family woman with a husband, Dick DeVos, and four already grown up children. The family has all through been contributing to conservative political and religious causes. It is unarguable that the family’s impact has been felt in the entire nation.
Robert Johnson of Florida, experienced the night mare of every correctional officer: an attempt on his life. The attempt on Robert Johnson’s life was not made inside the prison while he was working; the attempt on his life was made at his own home. Johnson was shot six times but lived. Worst of all the entire situation could have prevented. The attempt on his life was arranged via cell phone by an inmate that Johnson was in charge of. Robert Johnson now works for a company that works around the clock to ensure that prisoners are not able to use cellphones.
8300 cell phones were taken from inmates in Florida during a year and a half period. These traditional approaches to preventing illegal cellphones from circulating between prison inmates is clearly not enough to prevent the inmates from conducting illegal activities. Johnson says the only way to prevent these types of calls is by using technology. Since Johnson’s incident, Florida has since installed such technology. The state of Florida has Securus Technology in three of its prison systems.
It was February of 2017 when Securus Technologies announced its newest technology to prevent calls like these from being made. Securus Technologies calls this its Wireless Containment Solution or WCS. Securus said their infrastructure prevents cellphones from with in the prison from reaching the cell phone towers necessary to complete the calls. The technology doesn’t stop there, it collects data from these attempted calls to help prison officers and law enforcement catch the inmates that are attempting to make these illegal calls.
Where so many other companies have failed in their attempts at preventing these types of calls, Securus Technology has succeeded. Some technology simply identify where in the prison the calls are being made, but do not prevent them. These types of companies are not doing the whole job, they are relying on correctional officers to confiscate the phones once they have been pinpointed; Securus’s Implementation essentially bricks any phone while it is inside the prison walls. Securus doesn’t take any chances, by the time a correctional officer has responded to other technologies the damage could already be done.
Of course people who are authorized to make calls with-in the prison can still do so. Securus has the technology to white-list certain devices and allow them to make calls through the system.
States that have implemented Securus Technology into their prison system should be applauded. They have created a much safer work environment for their employees and have truly shown that they care.
